‘Fundamental’ is a sequel to ‘A Monument for the Absence’. In this
work I show or demonstrate the auxiliary struts that are visible
during construction and support of the walls of a building. These
auxiliary struts are normally made of wood and form a triangular
structure against a wall.
In my work the struts are made of ice, which
melt and eventually disappear. This is to demonstrate that the
objects are no longer visible because the building has been
completed. Because the struts eventually disappear as they melt
they reflect the construction of the building through time. The
only reminder of their existence are the pools of water which
remain when they melt.

‘Fundamental’ was realised in cooperation with Jaczon B.V. of
Vissershavenweg 35- 38 in the Hague. Based in the fishing port of
Scheveningen, this company owns a large walk in freezer. I
approached them to help me freeze the moulds for my construction
struts. I documented the process in a short film. As in many of my
works collaboration between the artists and companies outside the
artistic sphere is central to my approach.
