In 2017 the third years sculpture students organised an exhibition
entitled ‘Caramelo’. It took place in an area called ‘The Gray
Space in the Middle’ in the Hague.
I had been toying for a while
with the idea of using expensive building materials, if only for
one day. I was able to exhibit this idea at ‘Caramelo’ working
together with a building contracter (BMN). After some preliminary
research I knew exactly which materials I needed.

Accordingly to plan they were to be ordered and delivered to ‘The
Gray Space in the Middle’. The materials would be exhibited and
returned the following day.. they were after all expensive so
beyond my meagre student finances.
BMN delivered the order
using a large mobile crane placing it in the street outside the
Caramelo exhibition space. A composition was thus created which I
replicated when bringing the materials into the exhibition
space.
The composition
was outlined using white chalk, replicated outside to demonstrate
that they had been placed there initially. The receipt for the
materials and the fact that they would be returned to the building
company was evidence which I had framed and exhibited with the
composition. Visitors were able to read what type of materials and
their value were in front of them. Following the exhibitions
opening the materials were returned to BMN and I was reimbursed
having only paid transportation costs.
